Defeating Depression
Real Help for You and Those Who Love You
printed by CreateSpace, 2015
Howard W. Stone, Ph.D.
ISBN: 9781500 739751
Paperback, 243 pages

Based on years of research and clinical practice, Defeating Depression examines the four major faces of depression, and most importantly, how to deal with each. In addition to the recognition of depression as a multi-faceted disorder that demands multi-faceted treatment, what makes this book unique is that it speaks both to the person experiencing the depression and to that person’s network of family members and friends.

Author Howard Stone, Ph.D., is Professor Emeritus from Texas Christian University. He has published more than a dozen books on counseling and theology, and has authored numerous journal articles. In Defeating Depression, Dr. Stone

· Addresses both the depressed individual and his or her family or support system, noting that friends and family are particularly susceptible to becoming caught in the web of depression as it spreads outward.

· Offers an "action-oriented" approach over standard "passive" treatment. Each chapter offers two lists of specific “do-able” actions to be taken — one for the depressed individual and one for family members.

· Takes a multi-dimensional view of depression (physiological, cognitive, behavioral, and interpersonal), recognizing that depression is rarely caused by a single factor and that the most effective treatments address multiple aspects of the disorder.

· Acknowledges the importance of the individual's spirituality and belief system in developing a plan for treatment.

· Debunks some of the more popular myths still prevalent in treating depression and offers practical alternatives for management.

· Puts the task of managing depression and minimizing the chance of relapse squarely in the hands of the depressed individual, with educated support from loved ones.

· Includes a chapter on recognizing and preventing potential suicide.

· Includes a quiz for assessing the symptoms of depression.
