Crystal Set Monitor for one and two KW Navy Spark Transmitters from about 1917. This is the Kilbourne and Clark Clark Tone Tester type KS935 manufactured by Kilbourne & Clark. Pictured on page 53 of the original Greenwood's Vintage Radio {page 48 of newer editions}. Used to monitor the operators sending ... It is a small crystal set that didn't need an antenna {it was right next to a 1 or 2 KW Navy SPARK transmitter!} and was tap switch tuned to 300, 600 or 900 meters to allow the operators to hear and verify the tone produced by the quenched or rotary spark gap. A special thanks to Russ Kleinman {Sparks Telegraph Key Review} for the incredible photo of the original blueprint drawing of this unusual piece. The coil disk is hard rubber. The base is painted black. It would have been placed on top of the receiver or somewhere convenient for the operator to attach his headphones and monitor his sending for tone quality. It measures approx 5" dia at the base X approx 8" tall.
