Massie Wireless Radio Coherer
Pictures above is the Massie Wireless Telegraph Radio Coherer It is located at The New England Wireless and Steam Museum in Rhode Island; They gave permission for the use of the photo. It is a very early radio detector. Pictured at the left is a vertical glass tube. Inside there is a magnatized needle and metal filings. When a radio signal is received, the filing clump together. The door bell (minus the bell) was used to knock the filings apart after they cohered when the radio signal was received.
